Thanks to everyone who signed my petition to install a police camera on Howard.
It would overlook the El, Gale Park and various points of interest. Looks like I need to carry another one to the 5th floor to Rich. Any special messages you would like me to leave?
Maybe we can get one before this Hindrance to Peace is pushed through?
This road block should spur all 50 aldermen to grab what they can. Joe should lead the pack with our petition. Make the demand for North of Howard.
Insert: The camera petition idea came from a brainstorming session at a CAPS meeting. As with so many ideas here and elsewhere in the city, nothing ever evolves from the session. I carried out the idea that's all. Now the burden to pay attention is on the powers that be.

I have several observations regarding the police camera scheme. I know firsthand about these things as I practically live under one on Morse and Lunt.
The police camera is NOT the answer to this neighborood's crime problem.
First, cameras do clean out a concentrated area but push crime into other areas that are not covered by the limited scope of the machine. This happened last June when the drug dealers simply moved into the alleys, beyond the El tracks where the camera didn't reach and onto Morse Avenue where crime stayed until the residents stormed the Alderman's office and demanded action.
Second, I have read on this site (which is a worthwhile service to residents, by the way) that another major concern is business recruitment and retention. No businessman in his right mind would ever want to locate or relocate a viable business in an area that has police cameras posted on a commercial strip. It screams "stay away - this is a bad neighborhood" not "come on up, this is a great neighborhood that is thriving."
The solution is multifaceted but doable. It involves community participation (night vigils, crime walks, communication) and police presence. Actual police concentration, whether it be foot patrols, bike patrols or increased car patrols) is what is needed to push out and keep out the scum that is ruining this place for everyone who owns or rents, who pay staxes and who raises families here.
Your ideas have been tried in this area. Only problem is the majority rules and many low-income people are intimidated by the elements and won't join the minority. Will it matter if there's a camera? Most of Howard is vacant and has been for years.
re; the camera screaming stay away...it also screams 'we're watching'
Two murders occured on Jonquil this summer. A camera on Howard wouldn't have recorded it. The whole strip on Jonquil and other areas away from Howard are teeming with problem areas, i.e. the potential for crime is on every street and every corner NOH.
