Let's Try It Again

The matter of ‘positive posts’ to balance the blogs was mentioned at this afternoon’s panel discussion. Apparently no one noticed this very special post named A Mentors Magic.

Or if it was noticed, no one felt compelled to comment. I’m posting it again with an update on Maurice and the Gale football team. Last Sunday it was drizzly and cold but Maurice was out checking the field before the game. I stopped to chat and learned he was getting costs to provide uniforms and padding for the kids. He said a couple of the parents had mentioned starting a fund, but he knows they can’t afford much, so he planned to make the initial purchase himself. Now, I doubt this venture will be inexpensive, do you? So I said I’d check around and see about funding. Joe Moore committed to personally contribute once Maurice had an estimate. I will too, will any of you?

Maurice 002

If one young man can give his time, energy and love to the kids in his neighborhood, then here’s your ‘positive story’ and here’s your chance to give back too. If you can’t afford a donation to the uniform fund, you might stop and cheer for the team. You never know who may be a future pro football star thanks to Maurice.

Geart idea, Toni. I'm in for a hundred!

Where are we sending the checks?

We'd be delighted to contribute to this fund. I will also put the word out to some of my neighbors that don't read the blogs. Could you let me know where to send the checks at rrouilly@earthlink.net in case I don't get to the blog in time?

Thanks for bringing this story to our attention again.

Is there a listing or anyway to find out the after-school and extra-curricular programs that are available in Rogers Park? I'm not only talking about government/city programs, but also programs like the one above.

I'm especially interested to see if there are any music programs for at-risk youth. I think we all need to really support these programs.

I'm somewhat ignorant of the programs and events that are available to at-risk (and those that aren't at risk) youths in Rogers Park.

I'll be in touch with everyone who is interested in donating. Dan2, I'll have to do some researching on the programs for the kids.

Maybe we can have a fundraiser! Who knows, if we can do forums, we can do fundraisers. Who's got the bar?

We went to a a community meeting on a Sunday afternoon at Gale School and we noticed Maurice working with the kids - wow, does he have energy! When we came out of the meeting about two hours later, they were still playing full tilt. In fact, they were so into it we didn't want to interrupt to say hi, we just watched for a few minutes. I think a fundraiser would be great - I don't have a bar but let me know if I can help in any other way! In the meantime, we have a check with his name on it waiting.

I spoke to Maurice while the team was warming up yesterday. He checked with Sportmart and to fully protect the youngsters, the average price was $150.00 per person. He's looking at 30 kids. If anyone wants to do some online sportswear researching, please do. The concept of fundraising from now until August is still wide open but as with most efforts, we need people, places, and strategies.

Ideas are welcome.

This is exactly what's needed for the kids up there. It's rare that you find someone so committed to the needs of lower income kids. If it hasn't already been done, I'll organize a fundraiser for Maurice and talk to Sue at Pochin Suhr or I'll have at my home. Let me know how to get in touch with him and we'll start the ball rolling.
